Congrats on your forthcoming and move in with your partner. We're happy for you over here!
Is there anyway to redirect some of the SPLOST money from 2020 to your housing initiative. I wasn't for the Classic Center Arena Project before, but there was no way to vote for everything else on the docket without also voting for that too. If we're being honest though, large scale events aren't going to pop back in place anytime soon and I say that as someone whose income is derived from events. The city doesn't need a venue of that magnitude and we're already kind of heavy on mid sized venues for a city this size. I know there's probably measures in place since it was voted on, but money for Classic Center Arena Project seems like a waste at this point. Could better serve the homeless and that helps the whole city grow in a positive direction.
Hey neighbor! Thanks for the well wishes :) We are indeed intending to dedicate around 4 to 5 million dollars in leftover SPLOST affordable housing funds allocated toward other related projects, with 2.5 million likely making it's way into East Athens. We are restricted to using these moneys on housing-related infrastructure costs, but this can help incentivize private developers or aid nonprofit housing partners in developing affordable housing -- for example, we pay to lay sewer pipes, etc, so that the Housing Authority or someone similar can offer housing at a cheaper price. I hear you loud and clear on the Arena Project, too, and am working toward holding them accountable for balancing their remaining funding needs with projects that benefit the community-- they continue to come to us for approval for projects that will help fill the gaps in SPLOST funding, but how are those projects also giving back to us? Stay tuned for more on that and have a good weekend!
Rainy Wednesdays for the win.
